Our Process
Questionnaire
After you fill out a brief questionnaire and send a few photos, someone from our team will contact you to learn more about your project and, if appropriate, schedule an initial meeting. Principal designer Nathan Smith will meet you at your home to make an initial evaluation of the site conditions and begin brainstorming about what improvements might be made.
Preliminary Proposal
Our team will prepare a preliminary proposal with options that will outline the general costs and nature of the improvements to facilitate decision making and to establish the design parameters of the project.
Landscape Design
After we receive your feedback we develop detailed plans and designs which convey the design intent, showing how the spaces might be used, how plants might mature, and what the finishes, colors and textures of the finished landscape might look like. The design is refined in an iterative process to the point where we can prepare final pricing and a contract for execution of the vision.
Landscape Construction
We are a small company that gives personal attention to each customer. Our employees care about a job well done and are as proud of their efforts as we are proud of their skills. We are licensed, bonded and insured. Our team will work efficiently to execute your project according to the design with adjustments and improvements made as necessary.

Nathan Smith
Founder & Principal Designer
Nathan listens carefully and is capable of integrating disparate ideas into a unified landscape vision. He is proud to lead a team of talented workers that deliver on the promise of developing quality outdoor living spaces. From beginnings in the nursery industry in San Diego to horticultural work at Botanical gardens in Santa Barbara and UC Berkeley, to creating private landscapes, Nathan has kept his hands in the soil for his entire working life. He is a Leucadia resident who is passionate about serving his local community, keeping one eye on the vital creative pulse and the other on delivering valuable, practical solutions. He has a degree in Environmental Studies from UC Santa Barbara and has studied garden design and landscape architecture at UC Berkeley Extension.
Construction Team
We have a team of full time employees that are committed to the Groundswell vision. We can also count on a number of trusted subcontractors for specialty items outside of our focus areas.
